Talking trash (about design)

Tobias Wong

Medium: Magazine, internet
Dimensions: N/A

Rather than design an object to be disposed of, Wong decided to not make anything. Or, rather, to create a conceptual piece by “unmaking” something—a strategy that likewise reduces waste. Using a magazine as his medium, Wong collaborated with PAPER to “edit out” a 10-page section and make it available only online. Converting those pages from print to digital format (viewable at saved roughly 13 trees, decreasing PAPER’s footprint for the month. If every magazine followed this example, entire forests could be spared each issue.

About Tobias Wong:

Conceptual designer Tobias Wong explores the intersection of art, design, and contemporary culture with a critical yet playful eye. Often working through reappropriation, his designs are included in the permanent collections of MoMA and SFMOMA. In addition to projects for Cappellini, Prada/OMA, and others, he has organized or co-organized high-profile pop-up stores including Terminal 5 in the TWA Terminal at JFK airport and Colette Meets Comme des Garçons. Wong was one of Forbes’ Top Tastemakers and named Young Designer of the Year by both Wallpaper and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
